Something which the latest exodus has highlighted is expectations around direct messages.
I think Mastodon renaming DMs to “conversations” is going to be confusing to new users. Conversations is a pretty vague term. Replying to public posts in your timeline could easily be considered to be a conversation. Also the fact that conversation is an existing technical field identifying a thread in the ActivityPub protocol is likely to create confusion in support forums.
Concern about lack of end-to-end security for DMs isn't new. It's hard to implement that level of security in a web app in a manner which is more than mere theatrics. Commercial systems may be able to get away with making ludicrous security claims (eg. Zoom), but not here. My attitude has always been that if you want private chat with strong security then use an app dedicated to that (eg. Briar).
